The presenter will guide participants in a thoughtful dialogue about nonfiction and how we, as educators, can help students engage more deeply with nonfiction texts. Nonfiction is not simply “not fake.” As a genre, nonfiction extends beyond informational texts to include arguments, opinions, perspectives, and real-world issues. To develop responsible, critical readers, we must help students understand what nonfiction is, how it works, and how to evaluate the information they encounter. During this session, we will explore nonfiction stances and signposts that help students build the skills needed to read, question, and comprehend nonfiction with purpose.
