The science of reading has challenged how we teach students to learn high-frequency words.  This means we must shift from teaching students to memorize words to using orthographic mapping to help them connect sounds, spelling patterns, and meaning.  Participants should leave this session with an understanding of what brain research says about effective high-frequency word instruction, clear definitions of heart words, sight words, and high-frequency words, and practical teaching strategies to make word learning stick.
